![]() Tay Keith, the producer of the moment, appears twice for “Temptation” and “Promise U That,” both with beats you might not expect to hear from him. Production is excellent as usual, even without the incomparable Zaytoven. Travis Scott and Future continue their streak of great collaborations with “First Off,” which sounds like the demon offspring of Scott’s “biebs in the trap” and “Sicko Mode.” Young Thug and Gunna go back and forth on “Unicorn Purp,” a dark number that would have been right at home on Drip Season 3 or even Super Slimey. The album is light on features, but it’s clear to see that those who were invited along for the ride were chosen carefully. He’s making some of the best music of his career at this stage of his career, the true sign of an evolving and growing artist. Like an NBA player finding his jumpshot in the waning years of his career, Future is aging gracefully. He’s still going to hit the same beats (cars, watches and designer clothes are spoken about ad nauseam) but if you peel back the layers you see the story of a man struggling to reconcile with the choices he’s made and the choices of others around him. This is the most emotionally vulnerable his work has been, and it has shown in his growth and maturity as an artist. There’s no wasted space on this album, a refreshing note in the age of artists searching for as many streams as possible.Īs I said in my thoughts on Future’s last release, Beast Mode 2, Future is in a post- HNDRXX stage of his career. ![]() Most artists would fill a 20 song album with about seven or eight songs worth of filler, but not Future. Every song transitions into the next track right when it needs to and none of the songs are any longer than they should be. This album consists of 20 songs, but despite the length, it doesn’t wear on the listener. Not only is this another incredible piece of work, it may be among the best releases of an all time great career. Any talk you’ve heard in the last few weeks about Future “falling off” is just that, talk. I’ll start by saying this: put any reservations you may have about this album aside immediately. What started in earnest with 2014’s Monster has blossomed into one of the greatest sustained periods of excellence in the history of the genre. The WIZRD is the latest hallmark release in an impeccable run that has lasted for the better half of the decade. ![]() For Future, there appears to be no end in sight. ![]()
